Why Do We
Need An Amendment?
Why
do we need a state or federal constitutional amendment defining marriage? Are
we allowing our nation to become another Sodom (Gen. 13:13)? What will the
results be if we increasingly justify immorality under the guise of human
rights?
From
the beginning God made them male and female and said, "For this reason a
man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two
shall become one flesh" (Matt. 19:5). Until recently, the definition of
marriage was one man and one woman, not two men or two women. Who would have
ever thought that in a supposedly God-fearing nation it would take a
constitutional amendment to define what the Bible has defined from "the
beginning"?
The
scriptures have always defined the sexual relationship of man with man or woman
with woman as sin (Lev. 20:13, Rom. 1:24-27). From the creation we read of the
relationship between man and woman, husband and wife. The purpose is more than
pleasure; it is to "replenish the earth" (Gen. 1:28; 9:1).
Those who would support the marriage of man and man, or woman and woman, argue for their rights. Sin doesn't have rights; it has consequences. We may sin if we wish, but that sin will have undesirable results, both on earth and after death. God has made that plain from the beginning (Gen, 2:17; Rom. 6:23).
If
a man chooses homosexuality, he does not have the rights of marriage because
that is the consequence of his sin. Man does not have the right to murder,
steal or lie. He may choose to do such things, but he cannot claim the rewards
of the righteous when he does.
Do
we need an amendment to stop the justification of immoral relationships? I
suppose it may come to that, but what we really need is to quit allowing sin to
rule in our nation. We must quit allowing groups, judges, officials or anyone
else who justifies the spread of sin and immorality to do so, if possible.
David
warned that "the wicked plots against the righteous
and gnashes at him with his teeth" and also pointed out that "he who
justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous.
Both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD (Ps. 17:15;
37:12). Evil will always win if the
righteous do nothing. David also asked, "If
the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Ps. 11:3)
Look around. Our foundations are
crumbling fast.
